"We understand that theatre is important not only for entertainment, but also to ensure silent voices are heard... we don't have all the answers, but we are really good at asking questions and starting conversations"

"The Big Brotherhood has helped me discover myself and what it means to be human... it has given me new insights in how to express my thoughts and feelings. It is so inspiring to respond to difficult issues like drug addiction, xenophobia, corruption etc. I find theatre the most expressive and social platform there is."

The Big Brotherhood

is a theatre production company based in Kwa-Mashu. The company was formed by a group of artists which were previously known as “The Just Don’t Theatre Group”, as a result of a successful staging of their production titled “Just Don’t.” The Big Brotherhood started under the wing of K-Cap, concieving productions about crime and jail-life, and performing them in different schools and theatres in KZN. The company is managed by the artists themselves, and was one of the first TWIST theatre development project groups in KZN. The Big Brotherhood became independent from K-Cap and is operating now as an independent theatre company in KZN with ambitions to attend theatres and festivals in KZN and abroad.

We collaborate

We create plays that give people a sense of hope, community and belonging. Although we are an independent theatre company, we collaborate with various individuals, groups and insuitions outside of the theatrical world. We work closely with NGOS, government departments, the police, universities, schools and faith-based organisations, creating theatre and that is based on indepth ethnographic research.

We start conversations

We see theatre as a powerful medium to bring about psychological and social well being. Whenever we perform on stage, our goal is to create a space where society examines itself in a mirror, so as not to ignore the problems that confront us all. We don't have all the answers, but we are really good at asking questions and starting conversations.

"As an ex-prisoner myself, getting involved in theatre through the Big Brotherhood has helped me regain the respect and trust of my community"
